There are 5,225 empty .40 cal shells that form the mosaic on this table. For a long time I’ve thought a single empty shell is an elegant object. Multiples bring out new patterns not apparent otherwise.
I talked to many people across the gun control spectrum while researching this project. The image of a bullet meant very different things to each of them: security, violence, freedom, safety, danger. They all cared about the same things, though. Religious iconography means very different things to different people as well. I think we still all care about the same things.

This piece was awarded the Juror’s Award in the Best of Utah 2010: Mixed Media show, was featured at City Weekly’s 2010 Arty Awards reception, and at the 2011 Springville Museum’s Religious and Spiritual Art Exhibition.
